    Insulation for cryogenic applications

    Liquefied natural gas (LNG) expands by 600 times when it is transformed from a liquid to a gaseous state. Volume is an important economic and technical aspect when it comes to transporting or storing this raw material. The gas will only maintain its a liquid state at a constant temperature of less than -163 °C. Therefore, the high-quality and dependable insulation of pipelines, processing plants, transport and storage vessels is therefore a vital part of the LNG business.

Two LNG storage tanks with a total 250,000 cbm storage capacity and daily terminal capacity of some 22 million cbm of natural gas: floors and lids of the steel tanks were insulated, as well as piping and fittings.

    Flexible systems for extreme conditions

    Transportable plants and facilities are used around the world wherever liquid gas is produced and shipped. For the LNG plants, the receiving terminals (such as LNG jetties) and the vapour recovery pipelines KAEFER has developed its "Pre-Insulation (CCP)" system; a particularly high-performance and variable insulation product especially designed for cold and cryogenic media. Its prefabricated, multi-layer pipe insulation segments are transportable and reduce assembly and maintenance times on site. Composite casings protect the insulation from thermal, chemical and mechanical influences.

    KAEFER CCP offers a pre-insulation system with significant advantages over conventional, manual or other insulation techniques. The system is suitable for insulating pipelines at cold and cryogenic temperatures. The insulation consists of several layers of polyurethane foam and is encased in a tough external composite casing.
