The standards set by the operators and constructors of nuclear power plants are among the highest of any industrial sector. Safety, dependability, quality and functionality are indispensable for our clients from around the world. The engineers from KAEFER have refined our insulation and passive fire protection systems meticulously until they meet all the requirements.
We are particularly proud of the good reputation with customers from the nuclear industry that we have earned over many years. And because quality is an international language, KAEFER technicians are also busy in Brazil, Russia, South Africa, France, Switzerland, China and Finland.
KAEFER engineers and technicians from France, Finland and Germany worked on the construction of the first European pressurised reactor (EPR) in Olkiluoto, Finland. KAEFER is responsible for insulating the cover of the reactor vessel and the primary circuit.
Conventional insulation has its limits. These limitations occur whenever thermal insulation has to be removed rapidly, when it is subjected to mechanical strains or when disposal is particularly complex or where extreme temperature are expected. For every special case we have the right solution, which may entail full metal casings, cassettes or mattress insulation, as well as specially developed and tested passive fire protection systems.
Crush-resistant cassette insulation for a steam generator in Beznau power plant, Switzerland
All-metal cassettes are made exclusively of high-quality stainless steel. Thin, reflective layers of metal inside the stable shell and the air trapped between them provide the insulating effect. The all-metal cassette is impervious to damp, liquids, dust and dirt.
Cassette insulation is filled with mineral wool or high-temperature-resistant fibres. Stainless steel sheeting on the outside ensures stability and resistance to mechanical pressure. Cassette insulation is manufactured so precisely that it can be removed and fitted again very quickly, even by non-professionals, using the quick-release fasteners.
Like the cassettes, insulation mattresses are made to a precise fit and can be used anywhere a seamless surface is not required. A casing of hard glass fibre with a stainless steel core envelops the mineral wool inside the mattress. In areas where the insulation has to be removed and reassembled for inspections, maintenance or repairs, the reusable insulation mattress provides a logistically and economically compelling solution.
We will be happy to evaluate which of these advantages are relevant for you in technical and economic terms. Please get in touch with us. We look forward to hearing from you by phone or email.
